The City of Yarra (map) is located a few tram stops from Melbourne’s Central Business District. The City of Yarra includes the suburbs of Abbotsford, Alphington (part), Burnley, Carlton North, Clifton Hill, Collingwood, Cremorne, Fairfield (part), Fitzroy, Fitzroy North, Princes Hill and Richmond. At just under 20km2, Yarra is the smallest local government area in Victoria by land size, but accounts for 11.76% of employment and 9.6% of Gross Regional Product within Inner Metro Melbourne. With a population of more than 93,000, the City of Yarra has a growing, young, qualified and culturally diverse population. Close to a third (29%) of residents were born overseas in countries that include the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Vietnam, China and Greece.

The City of Yarra has a significant business and employment base and excellent access to the CBD. The Yarra economy has shifted away from a manufacturing base to a service based economy. Cremorne and Collingwood in particular, have become significant areas for employment. Yarra is also home to some of Melbourne’s most vibrant shopping strips including Bridge Road, Swan Street, Victoria Street and Church streets in Richmond; Brunswick, Johnston and Gertrude Streets in Collingwood and Fitzroy; and Nicholson Street, Rathdowne Street, St Georges Road and Queens Parade in Carlton North and Fitzroy North.

Residents, workers and visitors are attracted by Yarra’s galleries, live music venues, performance spaces, artists and community festivals. Popular attractions include Collingwood Children’s Farm, Abbotsford Convent, Dights Falls, Fairfield Boathouse, Merri Creek lookout and footbridge and Yarra Bend Park. Yarra also provides excellent access to a range of transport infrastructure, including roads and public transport and well established service infrastructure.
