Upper Hunter Shire (map) is located in the Hunter Region, approximately 250km north of Sydney. The Upper Hunter Shire is rural area encompassing over 8,000km2 of rich agricultural land supporting nearly 14,000 people.

The main townships of Scone, Aberdeen, Merriwa and Murrurundi service the surrounding rural areas. The shire is a major cattle, crop, pig, poultry and sheep producer, has an increasing number of vineyards, supports a cattle abattoir which supplies the Australian and overseas markets, and is the single largest producer of thoroughbred horses in Australia, second only to Kentucky in the USA. With the largest equine veterinary practice in the southern hemisphere, an equine focused TAFE and Equine Research Centre, Scone is well known as the Horse Capital of Australia.
